You’ve heard all about the benefits of making money writing online. It’s possible to make money and you can dump the nine to five.

That’s great, but there are always downsides, right? There’s always something that’s being hidden.

Of course there are downsides! There are things writers don’t tell you about making money writing online. They won’t tell you all of the bad stuff that goes on with clients or in their home life. Why do that when they want to encourage you to become a writer?

Well, I think you deserve to know the good and bad. This will help you understand that those troubles you’re going through right now aren’t just about you. We all go through them!

If you had a writing mentor you’d know all that by now. You see, most writers will share the negatives for when you hire them as your mentor. They want to help you through those dark times.

Here’s a look at six things writers don’t tell you about making money writing online.

You’re going to need to change your web host

As much as I’d love to say that I’m still with my original web host, I’m not. I’ve changed my web host at least three times since starting.

In fact, I know writers who have changed web host on a yearly or two-yearly basis, because of disruption problems.

And trying to get the perfect web host takes time. You need to talk to other writers and web owners, research into all the pros and cons, and then find something that is affordable for you.

I do highly recommend BigScoots for hosting ($). So far I’ve had absolutely no problems. All my domains were transferred by them and their uptime is excellent. The site speed is good and I can manage absolutely everything from one panel, rather than having separate panels per site.

You will work longer hours

This is only initially—unless you choose to work strange, long hours.

When you start out, you’ve got to remember you’re growing a new business. Like with any new business, it takes time to build your client base and get your hours to a minimum.

Be prepared to put in a lot of graft to get the point of having clients come to you. Get ready for marketing, phone calls, and much more. And don’t forget about improving your skills and guest posting for what initially seems like no profit at all.

If you’re not willing to put in the hours to start with, your writing from home business isn’t going to get off the ground. You can throw the idea of making money online out of the window.

You need creativity for writing

That sounds obvious right? Well, I know a lot of writers who don’t quite get that. They think everything is going to be handed to them on a plate, and all they have to do is string a few sentences together.

If you think you can do that, making money writing online isn’t for you. You’ll need a lot of creativity.

Sometimes you’ll just get given keywords and will need to create hundreds of articles out of them. In other cases, you’ll be given an initial topic that has barely any information online. There are also cases where there’s lots of information but you need to come up with something fresh and unique.

Just how do you do all that? That’s the art of being a writer. It’s why the jobs are outsourced so much.

You need to have discipline and motivation when making money writing online

Getting to your first writing goal tends to be quite easy. You may just want to make your first $100 or you want to get to that first $1,000. Once you get that goal, you need to figure out how to keep the motivation going.

Discipline to keep working, even when you really don’t want to, is essential. You can’t just have a day where you’re doing nothing on front of the TV. Doing nothing means making no money at all.

Hiring a writing mentor can really help with this issue. When I have mentees looking for help with motivation and discipline, I can go back through their blogging goals and help set new ones. I tailor my methods to suit that personalities. I’m here to help you too.

You’re not going to succeed overnight

There are so many writers who just seem to have succeeded overnight. They are making money online effortlessly. At least that’s what they’re telling you.

What you haven’t seen is the work that went into it all in the past. They’ve likely spent a year or two at least planning, writing, and slogging away at the computer. This could have been full-time or during their downtime from work. Either way, they’ve put in the graft.

Don’t expect to succeed in an instant. Don’t get disappointed when nothing has worked after a week. Be prepared to be patient when you’re writing from home.

Making Money Writing Online Truths

Your clients can be absolute PITAs

PITA clients are the worst, but we all get them. Many writers will miss out the fact that they’ve had people who have demanded work within 24 hours or refused to pay despite receiving everything.

Writers will try to forget that they’ve been made to feel like they’re robbing people because they’re doing something “everyone else can do just as well, if not better.”

That doesn’t mean you need to take everything the PITA clients throw at you. You’ll need to learn to stand up for yourself. You’ll need to learn to say no.

It was only when I hired a writing mentor that I started feeling more confident in my skills. That’s when I learned about the PITA clients and how to deal with them—and the fact that I really didn’t need to.

Now it’s your turn to succeed. Writers don’t tell you everything about making money online, but I am willing to share it all. You need to know everything before you decide it’s a career for you.
